What is Leadership Voice?

The only way to find your voice is to use it.

Austin Kleon, Artist

Leadership is more than just a title or a list of orders. It’s about inspiring, influencing, and guiding others toward a common goal. Effective leaders possess a unique leadership voice that reflects their values, beliefs, and vision. Discovering your leadership voice can be the key to unlocking your full potential as a leader. In this article, we will explore the meaning of leadership voice and discuss how you can find and develop your own unique voice as a leader.

As new managers are minted, they are often told to find their leadership voice. However, this personality trait cannot be defined by anyone else. Like a fingerprint, no two managers work the same way. Your leadership voice is a combination of your leadership style, how you complete tasks, how you lead your team, how you manage your executives, and how you communicate with the world. All of these elements come together to create your unique voice.

Finding your leadership voice is a journey that requires self-reflection and a willingness to learn and grow. It’s about understanding your strengths and weaknesses, values and beliefs, and how they align with your leadership goals. Developing your leadership voice takes time and effort, but the rewards are immeasurable. With the right guidance and mindset, you can become the leader you were meant to be.

Understanding Your Leadership Style

It is essential for individuals in leadership positions to have a clear understanding of their personal leadership style. This knowledge enables leaders to leverage their strengths and address any weaknesses they may have in order to lead effectively. Understanding one’s leadership style provides insight into how one communicates, delegates tasks, solves problems, and decision making approach. It also helps leaders identify areas where they may need further development to improve their leadership abilities. Being aware of one’s leadership style allows for better management of teams, resulting in increased team productivity, minimized conflict and enhanced job satisfaction. Furthermore, it allows for successful collaborations with different styles within a workplace setting that ultimately create positive business relationships.

Different leadership styles are appropriate for different situations, and each style can inspire a different type of response from employees. Autocratic leaders make all decisions without consultation, while democratic leaders involve their employees in decision-making processes by soliciting feedback to ensure consensus. Transformational leaders focus on inspiring and motivating their employees towards achieving common goals, whereas transactional leaders rely on offering rewards and punishments based on employee performance. Lastly, servant leaders prioritize the well-being of their followers over their own and commit themselves to empowering their teams to achieve organizational goals. Ultimately, effective leadership requires identifying a style that aligns with an organization’s culture while recognizing that the most successful leaders leverage different styles depending on situational needs.

Ask yourself, what fits best with my strengths and temperament? Does it fit with my company’s culture?

Identifying Your Core Values and Beliefs

Our beliefs are the foundation upon which we make decisions, perceive our environment, and interact with others. When we align our actions with our core beliefs, we operate from a place of authenticity, consistency, and integrity. This instills trust in those around us, whether they are colleagues, peers, or clients. To identify your core beliefs, reflect on what values matter most to you, what motivates you to take action or make decisions in various situations, and what gives you a sense of purpose or fulfillment. Once you have identified them, use them as a guidepost in decision-making processes; learn how to effectively communicate these beliefs and integrate them into your work practices.

This is an excellent stage to work with a coach to have assessments done; whether is Values In Action (VIA), Emotional Quotient 2.o, or Myers-Briggs, each offers a healthy, positive reminder of what is important to you and helps you build a path to incorporate those values into your everyday work.

Develop Your Communication Skills

One of the most important aspects of effective communication is active listening: be fully engaged and present when communicating with others, and ensure you understand their perspective before responding. Another crucial element is clarity: using clear and concise language, focusing on key messages, and avoiding jargon or overly complex terminology. Be especially cautious of using acronyms that are specific to your industry, company, and even your team. We tend to forget that not everyone knows the depth of the technology we use, even within our own teams.

Additionally, fostering an environment of open communication where all team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas can greatly enhance collaboration and problem-solving. This requires a great deal of that self-awareness again, as well as having an open mind. Closed minds cancel communication – period. Developing these communication skills requires practice and self-reflection, as well as seeking feedback from others on areas for improvement. By prioritizing clear, active, and inclusive communication, leaders can enhance team engagement and productivity while cultivating a positive work culture.

Building Authentic Relationships

It is important to show genuine interest in your team members by actively listening and valuing their input. Don’t repeatedly cancel one on one meetings or multitask on the phone. They can tell when you’re not paying attention. Authentic relationships are built on trust and honesty, so it is essential to lead by example and demonstrate integrity in everything you do. Leaders should take the time to get to know their team members on a personal level, including their strengths, weaknesses, goals, and aspirations.

Team members who are heard and valued are more likely to be engaged with their work and work harder to meet the organization’s objectives. Make sure to be inclusive in your meetings, especially when they involve in-person teams and virtual meeting attendees. Make sure you listen to everyone. Building authentic relationships takes time and effort but yields significant long-term benefits for both the leader and the team in terms of productivity, satisfaction, retention rate, and overall success.
