In the corporate world, the traditional top-down management approach is gradually being replaced with a more collaborative leadership style. As an ambitious professional, you may find yourself in a situation where you want to be recognized as a leader in your role, but your superiors may not fully acknowledge your potential. Managing upward, or leading your manager, can be a strategic approach to empower yourself and excel in your career. In this post, we will explore some key principles and strategies to effectively manage upward and make a lasting impact in your career.
I recognize this isn’t necessarily a popular opinion – managing your boss. However, many times we’re called on to do this to ensure things don’t fall off the rails. By taking a forward approach, you can learn what is important to your manager, create a partnership of mutual respect, and create that collaborative, creative team that we need right now.
Understand Your Manager’s Goals

To effectively manage upward, it is crucial to gain a deeper understanding of your manager’s goals and challenges. Take the time to initiate open conversations with your manager and actively listen to their expectations. This will not only help you align your efforts with their vision but also demonstrate your genuine interest in supporting the team’s success.
Showcase Your Leadership Skills
Even if your goal is not to become a people manager, showcasing your leadership abilities is essential. As a project manager or customer success manager, you have ample opportunities to lead by example. Display confidence, take initiative, and be proactive in handling tasks and challenges. Showcasing your leadership skills will encourage your manager to recognize your value as a group leader. You may also be able to assist and lead projects that are important to your management team and improve the efficiency and efficacy of your entire org.
Communicate with Clarity and Confidence

Effective communication is the cornerstone of managing upward successfully. Clearly articulate your ideas, opinions, and accomplishments. Be confident in expressing your views while also being receptive to feedback from your manager. I find that confidence has a thin margin and its best used authentically. You can be confident and unsure about something, and transparency is also important. Regularly update your manager on project progress and key achievements, keeping them informed and engaged in your work.
Foster a Collaborative Environment
To be recognized as a leader, foster a collaborative work environment with your peers and colleagues. Encourage teamwork, share credit for successes, and support others in achieving their goals. By being seen as a team player who elevates the entire group, you will gain the respect and admiration of both your colleagues and superiors. This seems counterintuitive but when you build collaboration, your wins are not only shared but elevated.
Present Innovative Solutions

As a project manager, technical account manager, or customer success manager, you are constantly dealing with unique challenges and opportunities. Hello, customers and clients? Take the initiative to present innovative solutions to problems and demonstrate your ability to think critically. Innovative ideas can significantly impact the success of projects and, in turn, garner recognition for your leadership skills. Not every idea will be accepted or even loved; however, thinking differently time after time sets you apart. You will stand out as someone who is creative and positively.
Seek Mentorship and Feedback
Seeking mentorship from seasoned leaders within the organization can be invaluable. A mentor can provide guidance, advice, and insights into managing upward effectively. Additionally, regularly seeking feedback from your manager can help you identify areas of improvement and showcase your commitment to personal and professional growth. Don’t be afraid to ask for help; asking and receiving builds a confidence in others that you are both open and fearless.
Focus on Continuous Learning
A true leader is always eager to learn and grow. Stay up-to-date with industry trends, attend workshops and seminars, and pursue relevant certifications. Demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning shows your dedication to excellence and positions you as a valuable asset to your workplace. If you manager is paying attention, she’s going to see your desire to learn and will, in turn, provide you opportunities to get that learning.

Empowering your manager requires dedication, patience, and a proactive mindset. By understanding your manager’s goals, showcasing your leadership skills, and fostering a collaborative work environment, you can establish yourself as a respected leader within your role. Remember to communicate with clarity, seek feedback, and focus on continuous learning to position yourself for success. You are not only building a team that includes your peers and individual contributors, but one that includes your boss. As you effectively empower your leaders, you will not only achieve your own goals but also contribute to the overall success of your team and company.
