Leading a technical team can be a daunting task, especially if you lack knowledge of the specific technical tasks your team performs, the details of your industry, or are just new to leadership. Confidence is fundamental to leadership. As a technical leader, you must possess the courage and strength to lead your team and guide them through the challenges they may face. To help you become a confident technical leader, here are three tips on how to build confidence.
Unlock Your Inner Leader

The first step in building confidence as a technical leader is to unlock your inner leader. Whole books have been written about this single tip. Start by acknowledging your own capabilities and strengths. Remind yourself of your skills and expertise, and own them. Developing a positive attitude towards yourself and your abilities will give you the confidence to take on the challenge of leading a team.
Once you’ve developed this self-confidence, you can start to expand your horizons. Take on new tasks and challenges and use them to push yourself further. Ask members of your team to train you on what they do, or take a class offered by your company. This will help you grow as a leader and better understand the technical aspects of your role and your team’s roles.
Strengthen Your Resolve
Confidence doesn’t come overnight, and as a technical leader, you must strengthen your resolve. Make sure you’re well-prepared for any task and do your research before attempting anything new. This will not only give you the knowledge and skills you need, but it will also boost your confidence. It helps to be honest: own it if you don’t know it. Good leadership will help you with where to go and to whom you can go for help. Don’t be shy about not knowing. The only wrong question is the one not asked.
It’s also important to stay focused on the team’s goals and work together to achieve them. When you’re able to work with your team to reach a common goal, this can increase your confidence as a leader. Additionally, make sure you keep up with industry trends and stay ahead of the curve. This will enable you to lead your team with confidence.
Take the Lead with Confidence

Another important step in building confidence as a technical leader is to take the lead with confidence. This means being confident in your decisions and the direction you are taking your team. Make sure you’re well-prepared to give instructions and delegate tasks to your team. Doing this will help build your credibility as a leader, and will also demonstrate your confidence in the decisions you make. I find that leading from behind is never helpful – for your peers and your team members. If you place the needs of your team first and take that leap, you’ll find support.
Being a leader doesn’t mean never making a mistake; it means owning your mistakes and learning from them so next time, you stride in with confidence.
It’s also important to stay calm and composed when addressing your team. This will help to maintain a sense of trust and respect among your team members. Finally, make sure you’re open to feedback and take the time to listen to your team’s ideas and perspectives. Doing this will show your team that you’re confident in your decisions and open to different points of view.
Challenges? Yes!
Building confidence is not generally an easy task. While time and experience do build confidence, you need to take the actions to lay that foundation. Actions, mistakes, and successes will all culminate in providing you with the experience that shows you that you can handle a situation, Like Nike says, “Just do it.”

Building confidence as a technical leader can be a difficult task. However, with the right approach and attitude, you can become a confident leader who can take the lead and guide your team to success. Unlock your inner leader, strengthen your resolve, and take the lead with confidence, and you’ll be able to lead your team with confidence.
