Leaders often find themselves caught up in a constant cycle of responsibilities, decisions, and demands. They are expected to guide their teams (whether they are direct employees or not,) make strategic choices, and drive personal and organizational success. There’s the stress of getting all your work covered as well as taking care of relationships. Phew! Where is the time for personal development and self-care?
Amidst these commitments, it is crucial for leaders to prioritize their personal development, increase their ability to disengage when needed, and ensure they do self-care. These are not “gifts” you give yourself but are incredibly important to your sustained well-being. Today we will explore why leaders should make time for these aspects and how they can effectively integrate them into their busy schedules.
Importance of Personal Development
Personal development is a lifelong process that involves enhancing skills, knowledge, and self-awareness. Leaders who invest in their personal development can broaden their perspectives, sharpen their leadership capabilities, and adapt to new challenges. By dedicating time to developing their competencies, leaders can become more effective decision-makers, communicators, and visionaries, leading to improved performance within their teams and organizations.

One thing to add: if you do not have employees reporting to you, leadership development is doubly crucial. Why? Because your management and executives, even your H.R. might not see you as “needing” leadership training. I contend that it is more critical to ensure it’s available to you and delivered to you so you may keep up and develop those skills that executives see as inherent in “managers.” If you see classes to take, offerings for managers, or coaching/mentoring provided to others, make sure to ask for it for yourself!
Recharging Energy
Leaders often face high levels of stress and a constant need to be available. However, neglecting to recharge their energy can lead to burnout, decreased productivity, and even health issues. Taking the time to rest, relax, and rejuvenate is crucial for maintaining sustainable performance. Leaders who prioritize energy recharge can improve their focus, creativity, and resilience, enabling them to tackle challenges with a fresh perspective and renewed vigor.
This is not just” talk.” What’s good for your team is good for you. This is a comprehensive list, but make sure it applies to you as a leader as well. In a September 2022 Work Trend survey by Microsoft, fully half of all managers feel “burned out.” I guarantee they didn’t ask ALL leaders, just managers. Like Stephen Covey said, “sharpen your saw so you can keep sawing!”
Self-Care for Sustainable Leadership

Self-care encompasses activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Leaders who practice self-care are better equipped to handle the pressures of their roles, maintain work-life balance, and foster positive relationships with their teams. Prioritizing self-care allows leaders to build resilience, manage stress effectively, and prevent the negative consequences that can arise from neglecting their own health and happiness.
How To Make Time For You
- Time Management: Leaders should prioritize personal development, energy recharge, and self-care by scheduling dedicated time for these activities. This can involve blocking off specific hours in their calendars, setting boundaries, and communicating their availability to their teams.
- Delegation: Effective leaders delegate tasks to their team members, allowing themselves time to focus on personal growth and self-care. By entrusting responsibilities to capable individuals, leaders can free up their schedules for activities that promote their well-being and development. This is not just dump and run – conscious delegation takes forethought but is well worth it.
- Seeking Support: Leaders can engage coaches, mentors, or peers who can provide guidance and accountability in their personal development journey. These individuals can offer insights, challenge their perspectives, and provide support when it comes to maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
- Embracing Learning Opportunities: Leaders should actively seek out learning opportunities, such as workshops, conferences, or online courses, that align with their personal and professional growth goals. Engaging in continuous learning allows leaders to stay ahead of industry trends, acquire new skills, and broaden their knowledge base.

Leadership is a demanding role that requires constant growth, adaptability, and resilience. By making time for personal development, energy recharge, and self-care, leaders can enhance their effectiveness, sustain their performance, and foster a healthy work-life balance. Prioritizing these aspects not only benefits leaders themselves but also sets an example for their teams, promoting a culture of growth, well-being, and sustainable success.
